How to Apply for the Fulbright Scholar Program
The Fulbright Scholar Program is a premier international exchange program for students, teachers and researchers. It allows them to study, take up teaching assignments and do research around the world. It was established by the US Congress in the year 1946 to foster exchange of ideas and knowledge between people from US and other countries.
The Fulbright Scholar Program enables over eight hundred academicians, professionals and students to go to other countries every year. This program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The fact that the Fulbright Scholar Program is so prestigious makes it highly competitive. There are certain qualities that the selection committee is looking for in applicants. These include a high level of scholastic merit, inclination and aptitude to study and teach abroad as well as leadership potential.
The program has a rigorous set of eligibility criteria. The applicant should be a United States Citizen. Those with permanent residence status will not be considered. Having a Ph.D. or an equivalent professional degree is equally important. The applicant should also have the relevant teaching experience at a College or University. Proficiency in a Foreign Language is also important wherever it is applicable.
Now there are also some other rules related to granting of the Fulbright Scholar Program. One such rule is that employees (including their spouses or dependent children) of the US Department of State or those working with organizations under contractual obligations to the Department of State cannot apply until one year after the termination of employment.
Those who have stayed outside the US for five or more years in a period of six years before the date of applying are also ineligible to receive the grant. A full disclosure is also warranted of any past or present felony convictions or misdemeanors while applying for the program.
