Types of Nursing Student Grants

Nursing is a highly rewarding and satisfying career. However, it entails an extensive period of study and an accompanying high amount of cost. For those of you who wish to enter this profession, there is a wide range of nursing student grants available.

Let us take a look at the Federal Grants available to Nursing students. They are largely sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services. This is a special division of Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). One of them is the Nursing Scholarship Program. Under this program, over two hundred scholarships and grant awards are given to students who are on their way to becoming nurses. Of course the precondition for this is that after graduation, the students have to work for a minimum of two years in a nursing institution. The scholarship covers tuition and allied expenses with an additional stipend of over $ 1,000. These grants favor students who are full- time nursing students in an accredited Nursing Program at an undergraduate level.

Another Nursing student grant is the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students. It is also a federal aided program which is focused at helping nursing students from financially weaker backgrounds. It covers a number of streams under the overarching umbrella of health sciences. Therefore the competition to get the grant is tougher.

Apart from the Federal grants, a number of states also provide nursing grants for students. As of now there are thirty eight states which provide support to those pursuing nursing programs. The most well known case is that of Florida followed by North Carolina.

There is another category of Nursing student grants. Some grants are given specially to those hailing from minorities or international students. For example, Arizona State University supports American Indian students who are enrolled in nursing programs.

There are also certain Professional Grants for Nursing Students. This means that the specific streams have their own associations which support nursing students. These include the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, American Academy of Critical Care Nurses, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Emergency Nurses Foundation Association and the Gerontological Society of America.

Each of these nursing student grants has their particular criteria for selecting recipients of the scholarships. It is best to start researching early. You can seek help from the career guidance counselor on the various options available for you.  You can also take advice from your parents and elders as well as plough through the internet for options.
